Evelyne Reisacher, associate professor of Islamic studies and intercultural relations, has been awarded the Book Award for Excellence in Missiology for 2016 from the American Society of Missiology (ASM), a national professional association for mission studies. Her book, Joyful Witness in the Muslim World: Sharing the Gospel in Everyday Encounters (Mission in Global Community), features global perspectives on current Christian engagement with Islam, equipping readers for mission among Muslims. Reisacher surveys areas where Muslims and Christians encounter one another in the twenty-first century, highlighting innovative models of Christian witness in everyday life. Drawing on insights from global Christianity, this survey takes account of diverse conceptions of Muslim-Christian relations.

The book, states the ASM award, has been recognized “for its significant contribution and is noted for how it will affect how mission studies are examined, understood, and interpreted.”

“To receive awards from three of the most important sources—Christianity Today, the International Bulletin and now the American Society of Missiology—for a single book is very rare indeed, but so is this book,” said Scott Sunquist, dean of the School of Intercultural Studies. “Evelyne has initiated for the global Christian community a new basis for Christian mission: joy. Using scripture, respected theologians, and even attachment theory, she explains that the purpose and goal of mission is what Jesus all along has promised: ‘that their joy might be complete.’ Dr. Reisacher has initiated a new and much needed conversation about mission and even the purpose of the Christian life.”

This is the second Book Award for Excellence in Missiology in a row awarded to Fuller by AMS. Scott Sunquist won the 2015 award for his book The Unexpected Christian Century: The Reversal and Transformation of Global Christianity, 1900–2000. We join Dr. Reisacher and the School of Intercultural Studies in their continued achievement and look forward to more innovative scholarship in the future.

Dr. Reisacher has now garnered three awards for Joyful Witness as the top book for missiology in 2016. She previously won awards from the International Bulletin for Mission Research and Christianity Today.
