Position Type



Student Financial Counselors are primarily responsible for the packaging of institutional and federal need-based aid. Each counselor must possess a thorough knowledge of institutional and federal policies. In addition, they provide financial aid and student account counseling to prospective and current students for all three schools, including Regional Campuses.

Essential Functions

Facilitates the administration of the federal student loan programs

  • Processes Stafford and Graduate Plus loans
  • Returns funds for which students are ineligible
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of all federal regulations related to the Stafford and Plus loan programs
  • Develops and review policies and procedures in an effort to remain in compliance with federal regulations
  • Completes monthly reconciliation process

Packages aid for all three schools

  • At the beginning of each awarding cycle, offers scholarships, loans, and federal work study to eligible students
  • Executes Professional Judgments in all applicable situations

Provides financial aid and student account counseling for prospective and returning students

  • Provides information regarding all available aid to prospective and current students
  • Counsels students regarding loan indebtedness and personal budgeting
  • Informs students about deferment opportunities for student loans
  • Advises current students of account payment options
  • Speaks in front of groups at Prospective Student Days and Evening Visits
  • Participates in online chat events

Participates in Policy Review Team

  • Responsible for periodic re-evaluation of policies and updating any written materials
  • Formulates policies and procedures that ensure efficient systems as they relate to the processing, evaluating, and awarding of financial aid. This is done in coordination with efforts to maintain federal and state compliance, meeting institutional goals regarding enrollment management and recruitment, and serving student needs
  • Discusses regulatory changes and implementation plans
  • Creates implementation plans related to Banner upgrades
  • Edits and/or creates application materials
  • Designs and maintain comprehensive communication plan that utilizes paper and web tools

Resolves issues related to discrepancy reports

Secondary Functions

  • Supervises and completes the resolution of Federal Edits and Verification of Income flags on the Institutional Student Information Records (ISIR’s)
  • Reviews applications selected for verification
  • Participates in annual Pre-audit procedure
  • Performs as a backup for the transmission and receipt of various student loan records by using multiple computer systems
  • Provides assistance to students and staff in special programs, such as the Hispanic Studies and Korean Studies departments
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Participates in professional training events as necessary


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1 year data entry experience
  • 2 years prior customer service experience in a retail, banking, or a higher education institution
  • 2 years of experience in financial aid or related field is preferred
  • Experience with automated financial aid administrative systems and thorough knowledge of Title IV regulations is preferred
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required. Occasional travel required
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills with a proven ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced, highly diversified environment
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, math aptitude
  • Verbal and written fluency in Spanish and/or Korean
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part as an administrative team
