THE SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY AT FULLER SEMINARY invites applications for an Associate/Full Professor to fill the Peter L. Benson Professor of Applied Developmental Science. We are seeking a full-time faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and research in applied developmental psychology with an area of specialization related to the mission and purpose of the Thrive Center such as positive youth development, virtue and character strengths, and religious and spiritual development.

Essential Functions

Underscoring their commitment to increasing thriving among young people, Robert & Dorothy King established the Peter L. Benson Professor of Applied Developmental Science. The chair was established to improve the lives of children & adolescents nationally and internationally through scholarship in positive youth development. This addition to the School of Psychology at Fuller Seminary highlights the importance of an inter-disciplinary approach that integrates theological and psychological underpinnings of youth thriving. The research and scholarship of the occupant of this chair is intended to focus on innovative research and teaching that covers the social, cultural, biological and spiritual factors affecting a young person's ability to thrive. Importantly, the chair was established to bridge the disciplines of research and practice in ways that are directly relevant to families and practitioners working with young people. An important role for the occupant of the chair is to mentor new generations of psychologists who are equipped to facilitate the positive development of young people. The professor will provide leadership in the Thrive Center for Human Development with the expectation that it will become a center of excellence and a leading voice in the field of positive youth development.

Secondary Functions

Responsibilities include graduate level teaching, research mentoring and maintaining a productive program of research. The occupant of the Peter L. Benson Professor of Applied Developmental Science chair will provide leadership for the Thrive Center’s applied research activities, develop his or her own line of research and dissemination activities, catalyze applied projects of students and colleagues, and help to develop a network of partnerships with relevant constituent groups for the Thrive Center (e.g., educators, schools, youth serving organizations, churches).


Qualified applicants will have a PhD or PsyD and a strong research record.
