Gaylen J. Byker

Gaylen Byker was born in LeMars, Iowa, on April 10, 1948. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1977, he received his Juris Doctor in Law cum laude from the University of Michigan, and in 1979, a Master’s in International Relations from the same institution. He received his PhD in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993.
Byker was president of Calvin College from 1995 to 2012. Prior to returning to his alma mater as president, Byker was a partner in Offshore Energy Development Corporation in Houston, Texas. Before that he served as director of commodity derivatives at Philbro Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Solomon, Inc. of Greenwich, Connecticut, where he was responsible for structured finance transactions and new businesses in base metals and agricultural commodities. From 1989 to 1991, he served as head of a commodity-indexed transactions group of Banque Paribas in Manhattan, New York, and from 1985 to 1988, was manager of commodity-indexed swaps and financings at Chase Investment Bank, also in Manhattan. From 1983 to 1985 he was on the faculty at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, where he taught corporate finance and legal aspects of international business at the university’s graduate School of Business. From 1978 to 1981, he was an associate at the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Brockius in Philadelphia. He has also served as law clerk to Chief District Court Judge John Feikens (US District Court, Detroit, Michigan), and in the legal department of Overseas Private Investment Corp. of Washington, DC. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the US Army (1967–1970) and on reserve duty (1971–1974). He was discharged at the rank of captain and repeatedly decorated.
A member of the bar in Pennsylvania, Michigan, the District of Colombia, and the US Supreme Court, Byker was also an adjunct instructor in international relations in the School of Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary.
