Master of Divinity (MDiv)

Quarter Units Required: 144

The Master of Divinity degree is a comprehensive graduate theological program covering a wide range of general and specialized subjects, designed to prepare students for full-time service in the church of Jesus Christ.

Distinctives
The curriculum is controlled by a vision of Christ’s Church as the people of God—a living, worshipping, witnessing community, within which faith is nurtured and through which Christ is served in the world. The curriculum is designed to instruct students in the study of theology in its widest sense, so that they may grow in the knowledge of God, discover and develop their God-given gifts and become more effective members of the body of Christ. This involves a deepening understanding of God and God’s world through rigorous academic discipline; but it also involves, in part as the fruit of such discipline, personal spiritual growth and maturity, and the acquiring of the relevant skills that will enable students to use their theological insights effectively in practical Christian ministry.

Typical Students
Students in this degree program often pursue it to meet ordination requirements, prepare for doctoral studies, or from a desire to be better prepared for a church or parachurch ministry.

Normal Progression
The MDiv degree is designed to be completed within three years. However, many students pursue the program on a part-time basis for all or part of their course of study. In addition to the daytime schedule and normal ten-week quarters, a full range of evening courses and intensive normal ten-day courses are offered regularly, allowing for a flexible program of study.

Ministries
This degree prepares students for church or parachurch settings: it allows students to train either for the general pastorate or for a specialized ministry as a staff minster.

Further Studies
The Master of Divinity is pre-doctoral, providing students the required master's degree necessary for pursuing further doctoral studies at Fuller Theological Seminary and range of other graduate institutions.
