June 20, 2008
Dear Alums,
As I write this, we're hearing news of incredible destruction from earthquakes, tornados, and record-breaking floodwaters in other parts of our country and the world. Some of our own extended Fuller community are among those affected. Yet God is present in the midst of the mess.
Last weekend, we celebrated with the Class of 1958 on the 50th anniversary of their graduating from Fuller. Time was spent remembering their time here, but we also reflected on God's faithfulness to each of them in their ministries as well as to Fuller Theological Seminary. What a contrast! The Fuller they knew had a little over 300 students, and it was not an accredited school when they began. Yet, this same weekend, over 500 individuals walked across the stage in Pasadena, with many more celebrating their graduation at various regional campuses -- all accredited programs. God is present in the celebrations.
The Alumni/ae Council met this past week and honored both Lee Merritt and Max De Pree in their newly appointed Honorary Alumni/ae status. They joined with those at Commencement in recognizing Pastor Rick Warren as the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni/ae Award. They met with our newly appointed Associate Vice President of Alumni/ae and Church Relations, Mary Hubbard Given, to discuss possibilities for ways to provide tangible resources to you, our alumni/ae. We hope in God as we think about the future.
As the academic year comes to a close and summer officially begins, may God gift us with the ability to recognize him -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Listen! He invites us to join him.
