Provost and Senior Vice President
C. Douglas McConnell is provost and senior vice president at Fuller Theological Seminary, as well as professor of leadership and intercultural studies in the School of Intercultural Studies. He earned an MA in Missiology and a PhD in Intercultural Studies from Fuller, and has been a notable leader in the global missiological community. With his wife, Janna, he spent 15 years as a missionary in Australia and Papua New Guinea with Asia Pacific Christian Mission (now PIONEERS). From 1992 to 1998, he was an associate professor and chair of the Department of Missions/Intercultural Studies and Evangelism at Wheaton College in Illinois. From 1998 to 2003 he served as the first international director of PIONEERS.
As dean of Fuller’s School of Intercultural Studies, Dr. McConnell established a new program focusing on mission to children at risk and spearheaded the redesign of the Doctor of Missiology degree—developing a format that allows leaders to earn the degree in context while continuing in ministry. Also under his leadership the new Center for Missiological Research was formed, which addresses challenges facing the global church by promoting collaborative research among Western and non-Western scholars on missiological issues.
McConnell has taught courses on interfaith dialogue, leadership, and missiological integration from a global perspective, and continues to be actively involved as a mission advisor and workshop leader worldwide. His recent publications include The Changing Face of World Missions (coauthor, 2005); Understanding God’s Heart for Children (coeditor, 2007); and contributions to the Global Dictionary of Theology (2008). As provost, McConnell is committed to several priorities: to provide solid administrative support for the president and the seminary community; develop strong team leadership for Fuller’s academic and operational affairs; foster diversity and a rich environment for spiritual formation in the seminary community; build up Fuller’s regional campus programs; and explore new processes to enhance communication and decision making.
