September 2010

September 22, 2010

Dear Alums,

It is with great joy that I write to you as we begin another school year at Fuller. Fuller is a busy place right now! This week we welcome all our new students. Next week alumni, faculty, staff, and students can participate in two special events: a book signing with President Richard Mouw featuring the new edition of his classic work Uncommon Decency, and our annual Festival of Beginnings--when we come together as a seminary community to begin the academic year in worship and fellowship. The theme for this year is "Joyful, Patient, Faithful"--from Romans 12:12: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer"--and Dr. Mouw will speak at the Festival of Beginnings on "Educating with Joy."

At this beginning of the new year we are sharing with you an Alumni in Action story featuring Tyler Zabriskie, who has made a new beginning of his own. His is a wonderful story of God's call and the changes that are sometimes required. We also hope that you, as alumni, will take advantage of the many resources that are available to you found in this newsletter and on our website. As you face change in your own life, may you be filled with the joy of the Lord.

Blessings,

Mary Hubbard Given
Associate Vice President
Alumni and Church Relations

WHAT ARE FACULTY READING?

Assistant Professor of Intercultural Studies Wilmer Villacorta, who teaches in Fuller's MAGL program, offers the following reading recommendation:

Ruth Haley Barton, Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership: Seeking God in the Crucible of Ministry (InterVarsity Press, 2008).
Barton's book provides an innovative approach to leading from within that the author defines as "soul-full" leadership. Written from the author's personal journey on the struggle of ministry and productivity, the book also provides germane and creative ideas to confront one's human tendency to burnout in ministry--a very common pattern.
