Dear Alumni/ae,

As this school year drew to a close, we enjoyed wonderful times of celebration with this year's graduates as well as those from the class of 1959, who gathered to celebrate their 50th reunion. You will find an engaging story of life and faith in this issue of AlumNews written by a member of this class, Alan Gates. We were inspired as we listened to this group reflect on what they learned at Fuller, the people who taught and encouraged them, and the lives they have lived for the Lord.

One member of this class who was too ill to participate in the reunion was Ray Anderson. You will read in this issue about Ray's death on Father's Day. Ray was a much-loved classmate who strongly impacted the lives of those around him during his student days, and then a revered teacher and scholar whose words, both spoken and written, impacted students for more than three decades at Fuller.

I had the great privilege of knowing Ray for most of my life. He served as the pastor of my aunt and uncle's church when I was a child. I also learned much from his courses at both Westmont and Fuller. In thinking about this great loss, the words of the hymn "For All the Saints" came to my mind. As it happens, in the volume Hymns for the Family of God, there is a paragraph of commentary on that hymn written by my father, David Allan Hubbard:

The Temptation to Quit

The program of God through history is like a relay race. Let one runner drop out and the whole team loses. Let one runner lose the baton and the whole team is eliminated. Let one runner break the rules and the whole team is disqualified. The work of no runner counts until every runner does his share and the anchor man has hit the tape at the finish line. The phrase "let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus" is the key. The idea is clear. There are lots of distractions as we run. Bypaths beckon us; false goals attract us; competition discourages us; opposition causes us to falter. Jesus, however, a tried and trusted leader who blazed the trail of faith by His own obedience and perseverance and who finished the course in a burst of glory, is both our guide and our goal. We look away from everything else to Him, if we want to run well.

Ray and so many other Fuller graduates, men and women around the world, ran well. "For all the saints who from their labors rest, / Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, / Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest: Alleluia! Alleluia!"

Fuller Mourns the Passing of Professor Ray Anderson
Ray S. Anderson, professor emeritus of theology and ministry and a beloved member of Fuller's faculty for more than three decades, passed away on Sunday, June 21. A Request for Prayer
School of Theology Professor John Goldingay's wife, Ann Goldingay, died on Sunday, June 28. Many in the Fuller community knew Ann, who suffered from multiple sclerosis for many years. Please keep Dr. Goldingay and his family in your prayers.
