학생 비자 (F-1 Visas)

 

비자신청  

비이민비자 신청 (non-immigrant visas)을 할 경우 대부분 신청자의 본국에 소재하고 있는 대사관이나 영사관에 비자 신청을 하게 됩니다. 물론 미대사관이 있는 곳이라면 어느 곳에서든지 비자 신청을 할 수 있지만, 신청자의 본국이 아닌 제3국에서 신청을 할 경우 비자 발급이 더 어려울 수도 있습니다.

F-1 학생비자를 취득하기 위해서는 우선 I-20 (I-20 Certificate of Eligibility) 를 해당 학교로 부터 발급받아야 합니다. 풀러신학교 (Fuller Theological Seminary)는  F 항목의 비이민 비자를 발급할 수 있는 권한이 있지만 이 권한을 유지하기위해서는 미 정부의 규정을 반드시 준수해야 합니다. 또한 풀러신학교는 ISO (international services office)를 통해 이러한 항목에 해당하는 비자를 소지한 분들이 합법적인 신분을 유지할 수 있도록 적합한 정보를 제공합니다. 풀러신학교에서  I-20를 발급하기 위해서는 지원자가 ISO에 재정후원 약정서  (Declaration of Financial Support (DFS) 를 제출해야 합니다. ISO에서 재정후원 약정서를 접수한 후 I-20를 발급할 수 있으며 발급받은 I-20로 F1비자신청을 하실 수 있습니다. 

   

I-20 (I-20 Certificate of Eligibility) 

  • 제3국 여행을 위해 ISO로 부터  I-20 마지막 장에 받게 되는 여행자 서명 (travel validation)은 최대 6개월간 유효합니다.  
  • 지속적으로 정규수업 (full-time)을 수강했으며 모든 정보가 I-20에 기재된 사실과 동일할 경우 I-20를 가지고 미국에 재입국할 수 있습니다. 
  • 만일 5개월 이상 미국을 떠나 있다가 재입국할 경우 새로운 I-20를 발급받아야 합니다. 이런 경우  ISO에 연락을하셔야 합니다. 
  • 미국에 입국하는 즉시 국토안보부 (Department of Homeland Security, DHS) 담당관은 미국 입국일 및 미국에서  F1 신분으로 체류를 인정하는 내용 등이 기재된 I-94 (Arrival-Departure Records, 출입국 도착 기록)카드를 발급합니다.  만일 I-94카드에 “F-1 D/S”가 아닌 다른 내용이 명시되었을 경우 ISO에 즉시 연락해야 합니다. 
  • 만일 학위과정을 마친 후 OPT 기간 내에 있다면 아래의 사항을 반드시 참조해 주세요.

(Applying for a Visa)
 

 

Applicants for non-immigrant visas usually apply at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of permanent residence. Although visa applicants may apply at any U.S. consular office, it may be more difficult to qualify for the visa outside the country of permanent residence.

In order to obtain an F-1 Visa, you must first receive an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility. Fuller is authorized to issue certificates of eligibility (I-20) for F categories of non-immigrant visas but Fuller must comply with U.S. government regulations in order to maintain this authorization. The seminary, through the international services office, must also provide information regarding the maintenance of lawful status in the United States of those holding visas in these categories. In order for Fuller to issue an I-20, you must submit a Declaration of Financial Support (DFS)  to the International Services Office. Once the International Services Office receives the DFS, an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility can be created and you may apply for an F-1 Student Visa. 

   

I-20 (I-20 Certificate of Eligibility) 

  • The travel signature on your Form I-20 is valid for a maximum of one year.  
  • You may use your I-20 to enter the U.S. as long as you are a continuing, full-time student and all the information on it remains the same 
  • If you are returning to the U.S. after a leave of absence and/or an absence of more than 5 months, you must obtain a new I-20 prior to re-entry. Contact an the ISO if this applies to you.  
  • Upon entry to the U.S., a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officer will issue an I-94 card to you that will indicate the date of entry and grant you F-1 status for duration of status (F-1 D/S). If your I-94 card indicates anything other than F-1 D/S, contact the ISO immediately upon return.
