ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All Applicants:
- Completed and signed Application for Admission, including:
- Religious Autobiography, parts A and B
- Ministry Experience responses
- A $75 nonrefundable application fee (if the application is submitted online) or a $100 nonrefundable application fee (if the application is submitted in paper form)
- Official transcripts from all postsecondary schools attended (undergraduate and graduate coursework)
- Evidence of obtaining a master's degree from an accredited institution with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher
- Successful completion of the following prerequisite coursework:
- Theology: 40 quarter units (27 semester units). These units cannot include biblical languages or "ministry" courses (i.e. preaching, homiletics, pastoral counseling, etc.). Note that 16 of the 40 quarter units can be taken at the undergraduate level.
- Missiology: 40 quarter units (27 semester units) including at least 20 units total of mission theology, global history of Christianity and cultural anthropology or other social sciences.
- All applicants to the PhD in Intercultural Studies program must take the verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections of the general Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The test-date of the official GRE score must not be more than five years preceding the date of application for Fuller. (To provide enough time for scores to be calculated, delivered, and processed, applicants are advised to take the GRE test by December 15th, at least one month before the admissions application deadline of January 15th.)
- Three references: one pastoral and two academic
- A 2-3 page (plus bibliography) Description of Proposed Research Interest (download Description of Proposed Research Interest Guidelines). Note: A match between interests of the applicant and strengths of our current Fuller faculty is a critical factor in admissions decisions.
- A 15-30 page writing sample. This writing sample should demonstrate graduate-level research and writing competence in English, including good use of scholarly sources, and preferably have either theological or missiological significance - not necessarily focused on the applicant's area of research interest.
- Applicants whose first language is not English must provide an official record of scores earned on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. Only test scores earned within two years preceding the submission date of the applicant's current PhD application will be acceptable. TOEFL overall scores of at least 100 (internet-based) or 600 (paper), or IELTS overall scores of 7.0 meet the minimum English language entrance requirements.
