SUMMARY:Fuller Texas: How does worship change lives?
DESCRIPTION:On November 8\, 2018 Dr. Alexis Abernethy\, Fuller’s Associate Provost for Faculty Inclusion and Equity and Professor of Psychology\, will host a public lecture in Houston\, TX on “How Worship Changes Lives?”\, exploring such questions as: \n\nHow does worship impact and change us?\nHow do our songs and sermons\, prayers\, and praises actually help us learn\, grow and develop as disciples?\n\nFor years Dr. Abernethy has studied the worshipping lives of diverse congregations. Her research focuses on how our worship practices facilitate spiritual transformation and growth. \nWe invite you to join leaders around the Houston area as Dr. Abernethy shares the results of her research and invites us into a larger conversation about how we can design and lead worshipping communities toward deeper spiritual growth and development. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Online registration is required.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Exploring the Therapy and Ethics of Forgiveness and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Fuller’s School of Psychology and the SOP Alumni Committee is please to host Exploring the Therapy and Ethics of Forgiveness and Reconciliation\, a workshop with Dr. Terry Hargrave on Saturday\, November 17\, 2018\, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p. m. in Travis Auditorium. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP\nThe core of forgiveness involves recovering from violation and trauma. It is often thought of as a “letting go” of pain\, anger and bitterness. However\, Dr. Hargrave will examine forgiveness as a process of “putting back” as opposed to “letting go”. “Putting back” involves restoring as much love and trustworthiness into the relationships as is feasible and desirable in an ethical and sound therapeutic manner. This is a foundational process of The Restoration Model of therapy. Attendees will understand how we suffer when love and trustworthiness are violated\, and how their restoration forms essential frameworks for identity and safety. \nDr. Hargrave will outline the four pathways or stations to forgiveness using The Restoration Model. These are: 1) Insight – focused work with the victim to be able to stop the victimizer from continuing violations; 2) Understanding – where the victim comes to understand the development\, history and limitations of the victimizer and the past legacy of the victimizer’s own victimization; 3) Giving the Opportunity for Compensation – a focus on the victim and victimizer rebuilding a trustworthy relationship through sequential interactions that build a sense of safety: 4) Overt Forgiveness – allowing victim and victimizer to confront the issue of past violations and restore their relationship through conversation and dialogue. \nAfter attending this workshop\, participants should be able to: \n\nDiscuss how love and trustworthiness are associated with identity and safety.\nIdentify how relational violations affect identity and safety.\nName at least three techniques used in therapy involving the stations of Insight and Understanding.\nIdentify therapeutic techniques used to facilitate the stations of Giving & Opportunity for Compensation.\nDiscuss how Overt Forgiveness enables victim and victimizer to cultivate relational restoration.\nDiscuss at least two difficult ethical issues in the work of therapy involving forgiveness and reconciliation.\n\nSchedule: \nRegistration – 8:00 – 8:45 a.m. \nMorning Session – 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \nLunch – 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. ($15 or lunch on your own) \nAfternoon Session – 1:45 – 5:00 p.m. \nAlumni Reception – 5:30 – 9:00 p.m. (free) \n Pricing: \n\nFuller Alumnus: $150\nGeneral Admission: $175\nFuller School of Psychology Student: $20 (30 spaces available)\nLunch: $15\n\nRegistration is limited; early registration is strongly encouraged. \nContact sarahbucek@fuller.edu with any questions. Fuller Theological Seminary/Graduate School of Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SUMMARY:2019 MLK Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Please join the William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies in celebrating the life and leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. We are honored to host Dr. Dwight Hopkins\, the Alexander Campbell Professor of Theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School\, as this year’s featured speaker. We are also delighted to welcome Bishop Kenneth Ulmer as the guest speaker for our Celebration Worship Service. This year we have chosen The Black Church and the Urban Poor in America as our theme. On April 4\, 1968\, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis\, Tennessee\, while fighting for a 10-cent wage increase for garbage workers—efforts by King that were part of a broader and more sustained initiative known as the Poor People’s Campaign. With over 43 million people living in poverty in the United States today\, King’s ideas still hold much power. \nThis event is open to the public but registration is required. Visit fuller.edu/mlk for the schedule of events and to register.

SUMMARY:Black Samson Goes to Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:January 25\, 2019\n5:00 pm\nGeneva Room\, Payton Hall\n\nIs Cleopatra Black? Is Jesus Black? Is Samson Black? And what is at stake in these questions of historical and literary representation? Based on their forthcoming book Black Samson: The Untold Story of an American Icon (Oxford University Press)\, biblical scholars Nyasha Junior and Jeremy Schipper analyze visual representations of Samson as a Black man in American media. They trace the use of Black Samson imagery in political cartoons\, paintings\, comic books\, graphic novels\, television\, and film from the mid-nineteenth century to today. \nDr. Nyasha Junior’s research and teaching focus on the intersections of religion\, race\, and gender; her public scholarship has appeared in The Washington Post\, Buzzfeed\, Religion and Politics\, and other media outlets.  Dr. Jeremy Schipper has published in a number of leading journals and has received a number of honors for his research\, including most recently the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for his research on Denmark Vesey’s Bible. Junior and Schipper teach in the Department of Religion at Temple University in Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:The Fear of the Lord and Biblical Ethics
DESCRIPTION:February 22\, 2019\n5:00 pm\nGeneva Room\, Payton Hall\nMany Christians today emphasize the centrality of love in the Bible. Love dominates not only discussions of God’s saving actions but also human responses to God and neighbor. While love certainly is an important biblical idea\, the Bible frequently uses a very different emotion in these arenas: fear. Repeatedly\, the Bible suggests that fearing God is the appropriate response to God’s saving actions. The biblical text also links the fear of the Lord to a range of praiseworthy human behaviors including  worshipping God and caring for vulnerable populations. Drawing on recent research into emotion\, this presentation explains why the polysemous expression “the fear of the Lord” proved attractive to biblical writers. Although many modern cultures disdain fear\, this emotion closely relates to one’s ultimate allegiances\, and it can facilitate attitudes of humility. Properly understood\, fearing God can motivate upright living.\n \n\nDr. Matthew Schlimm is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and has served churches in Michigan\, Minnesota\, and North Carolina. He teaches at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. His research interests focus on biblical theology and biblical ethics\, from which have arisen three books: From Fratricide to Forgiveness: The Language and Ethics of Anger in Genesis (Eisenbrauns); This Strange and Sacred Scripture: Wrestling with the Old Testament and Its Oddities (Baker)\, and 70 Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know (Abingdon). Schlimm also served as one of the editors for the CEB Study Bible and has published in a variety of journals.
