SUMMARY:The Fear of the Lord and Biblical Ethics
DESCRIPTION:February 22\, 2019\n5:00 pm\nGeneva Room\, Payton Hall\nMany Christians today emphasize the centrality of love in the Bible. Love dominates not only discussions of God’s saving actions but also human responses to God and neighbor. While love certainly is an important biblical idea\, the Bible frequently uses a very different emotion in these arenas: fear. Repeatedly\, the Bible suggests that fearing God is the appropriate response to God’s saving actions. The biblical text also links the fear of the Lord to a range of praiseworthy human behaviors including  worshipping God and caring for vulnerable populations. Drawing on recent research into emotion\, this presentation explains why the polysemous expression “the fear of the Lord” proved attractive to biblical writers. Although many modern cultures disdain fear\, this emotion closely relates to one’s ultimate allegiances\, and it can facilitate attitudes of humility. Properly understood\, fearing God can motivate upright living.\n \n\nDr. Matthew Schlimm is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and has served churches in Michigan\, Minnesota\, and North Carolina. He teaches at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. His research interests focus on biblical theology and biblical ethics\, from which have arisen three books: From Fratricide to Forgiveness: The Language and Ethics of Anger in Genesis (Eisenbrauns); This Strange and Sacred Scripture: Wrestling with the Old Testament and Its Oddities (Baker)\, and 70 Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know (Abingdon). Schlimm also served as one of the editors for the CEB Study Bible and has published in a variety of journals.

SUMMARY:Payton Lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Self and Spirituality in Second Temple Judaism\nApril 3-4\, 2019\nIn the centuries following the destruction of the state of Judah\, significant changes occurred in the religious culture of early Judaism as the nation reconstituted itself. While considerable attention has been paid to the developing role of the Torah and the emergence of new forms of worship\, less attention has been given to how new forms of spirituality encouraged the development of new ways of experiencing the self\, especially in the culture of prayer. Guest lecturer\, Prof. Carol A. Newsom will help us understand how these developments form a particularly important context for the emergence of early Christian understandings of the self and its relation to God. \nThe Payton Lectures are free and open the public. As space is limited\, registration is strongly encouraged. \nSchedule of Events: \nWednesday\, April 3:  \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm: When the Problem Is Not What You’ve Done but Who You Are: The Changing Focus of Atonement \n12:15 – 1:30 pm: Lunch and Conversations ($5) \nThursday\, April 4: \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm: Constructing Landscapes of Interiority in Second Temple Judaism \n

SUMMARY:God's Monsters
DESCRIPTION:In the biblical imagination\, the heavens are teeming with life—and it isn’t all angels singing. God is surrounded by hybrid creatures\, vengeful spirits\, divine hitmen\, and other bizarre figures who commit remarkably violent acts\, all in God’s employ. God is surrounded by an entourage of monsters. Many of these find their roots in the divine monsters of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia\, particularly the model of a high deity attended by a company of monsters which is known from broader Near Eastern literary patterns. How should we understand the monsters of God’s entourage\, and what do they indicate about biblical conceptions of God? \nEsther Hamori is a professor of Hebrew Bible at Union Theological Seminary in New York. She is currently writing a book on the biblical monsters of God’s entourage. Hamori specializes in ancient Israelite concepts of divine-human contact and communication\, and is the author of Women’s Divination in Biblical Literature: Prophecy\, Necromancy\, and Other Arts of Knowledge (Yale University Press\, 2015) and other works. Hamori has a PhD in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near East from New York University (2004)\, an MDiv from Yale Divinity School (1997)\, and a BA in Violin Performance from Sarah Lawrence College (1994).

SUMMARY:Fuller Northwest Community Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate God’s faithfulness to the Fuller Northwest community by acknowledging the loss of our campus presence in Seattle and celebrating the community that we pray will now grow and flourish in new ways. \n\nWhile we are grieved to see the physical campus space close at the end of this summer\, we are even more grateful for the community that has developed over the past forty-six years. We will gather to socialize\, to recognize the contributions of individuals in our community\, and to hear about the future of Fuller Seminary from President Mark Labberton. \nHors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served\, and we’ll have live music! \nSpace is limited\, so please confirm your attendance by reserving tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fuller-northwest-community-celebration-tickets-58385789468
