While considerable attention has been paid to the developing role of the Torah and the emergence of new forms of worship\, less attention has been given to how new forms of spirituality encouraged the development of new ways of experiencing the self\, especially in the culture of prayer. Carol A. Newsom will help us understand how these developments form a particularly important context for the emergence of early Christian understandings of the self and its relation to God. \nCarol A. Newsom\nCharles Howard Candler Professor of Old Testament\nCandler School of Theology at Emory University \nCarol A. Newsom is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Old Testament at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta\, and a senior fellow at Emory’s Center for the Study of Law and Religion. Dr. Newsom’s research focuses on the Dead Sea Scrolls\, the Wisdom tradition\, the book of Daniel\, and apocalyptic literature. She has written and edited 13 books and scores of articles\, book chapters\, translations\, encyclopedia articles\, and reviews. She co-edited the acclaimed Women’s Bible Commentary\, now in its third edition\, which challenges and explores the implications of long-held assumptions about the Bible’s portrayal of women and other marginalized groups.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Exploring the Therapy and Ethics of Forgiveness and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Fuller’s School of Psychology and the SOP Alumni Committee is please to host Exploring the Therapy and Ethics of Forgiveness and Reconciliation\, a workshop with Dr. Terry Hargrave on Saturday\, November 17\, 2018\, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p. m. in Travis Auditorium. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP\nThe core of forgiveness involves recovering from violation and trauma. It is often thought of as a “letting go” of pain\, anger and bitterness. However\, Dr. Hargrave will examine forgiveness as a process of “putting back” as opposed to “letting go”. “Putting back” involves restoring as much love and trustworthiness into the relationships as is feasible and desirable in an ethical and sound therapeutic manner. This is a foundational process of The Restoration Model of therapy. Attendees will understand how we suffer when love and trustworthiness are violated\, and how their restoration forms essential frameworks for identity and safety. \nDr. Hargrave will outline the four pathways or stations to forgiveness using The Restoration Model. These are: 1) Insight – focused work with the victim to be able to stop the victimizer from continuing violations; 2) Understanding – where the victim comes to understand the development\, history and limitations of the victimizer and the past legacy of the victimizer’s own victimization; 3) Giving the Opportunity for Compensation – a focus on the victim and victimizer rebuilding a trustworthy relationship through sequential interactions that build a sense of safety: 4) Overt Forgiveness – allowing victim and victimizer to confront the issue of past violations and restore their relationship through conversation and dialogue. \nAfter attending this workshop\, participants should be able to: \n\nDiscuss how love and trustworthiness are associated with identity and safety.\nIdentify how relational violations affect identity and safety.\nName at least three techniques used in therapy involving the stations of Insight and Understanding.\nIdentify therapeutic techniques used to facilitate the stations of Giving & Opportunity for Compensation.\nDiscuss how Overt Forgiveness enables victim and victimizer to cultivate relational restoration.\nDiscuss at least two difficult ethical issues in the work of therapy involving forgiveness and reconciliation.\n\nSchedule: \nRegistration – 8:00 – 8:45 a.m. \nMorning Session – 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \nLunch – 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. ($15 or lunch on your own) \nAfternoon Session – 1:45 – 5:00 p.m. \nAlumni Reception – 5:30 – 9:00 p.m. (free) \n Pricing: \n\nFuller Alumnus: $150\nGeneral Admission: $175\nFuller School of Psychology Student: $20 (30 spaces available)\nLunch: $15\n\nRegistration is limited; early registration is strongly encouraged. \nContact sarahbucek@fuller.edu with any questions. Fuller Theological Seminary/Graduate School of Psychology is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Fuller Theological Seminary SOP maintains responsibility for this program and its content. \nRegistration includes continuing education for psychologists\, marriage and family\, counselors\, and social workers. SUMMARY:Black Public Theology and Race in America
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn Friday\, October 12 and Saturday\, October 13\, 2018\, Fuller Seminary’s William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies will host a public symposium on “Black Public Theology and Race in America”. Taking place on Fuller’s campus\, this two-day event will engage black scholars and black church practitioners. The symposium seeks to bring the black academy and the black church into dialogue to explore ways to distill black theology and make it accessible to the black church and community. \nEvening sessions of this event are free and open to the public. The day-time sessions are open to the public but tickets must be purchased online (discounts available for Fuller students\, alumni\, faculty\, and staff). Click the link below to view the full event schedule and register online to attend. \nPARKING\nParking is free for this event in designated lots but guests must display a parking pass on their dashboard. The designated parking lots are listed below\, as well as on the parking pass itself. Click here to download the event parking pass. \n\n235 N. El Molino\, Pasadena\, CA 91101\n185 N. Madison\, Pasadena\, CA 91101\n128 N. Madison\, Pasadena\, CA 91101\n\nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM \nBlack theology’s influence in the university and seminary in providing a hermeneutic that aids in understanding the Christian faith through the lens of the black experience is well attested.  James Cone\, Cornel West\, Robert Franklin\, Jacqueline Grant\, Cheryl Sanders\, and Katie Cannon are but a few advocates\, popularizers\, and proponents of this interpretive method. \nUnfortunately\, black theology remains largely an alien intellectual avocation to most black leaders and the black church. Its influence in the black church and the black community in an era of Black Lives Matter\, is at best negligible. The symposium seeks to bring the black academy and the black church together in a dialogic conversation that will explore ways to distill black theology and make it accessible to the black church and community. \nABOUT THE PANNELL CENTER \nThe William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies seeks to expand the formation of today’s Christian leaders\, deepening their understanding of and engagement with the African American church and its contributions to society. Through academic\, practical\, and spiritual formation opportunities\, the center nurtures relationships between the broader church\, the Fuller community\, and the African American church\, community\, and culture. \nThe Pannell Center was birthed in 1974—initially called the Theological Studies Program for Black Ministers—largely through the efforts of former trustee and longtime faculty member William E. Pannell\, in whose honor the center was named in 2015. Its founding stemmed from a conviction that the Black church has much to contribute to the seminary experience\, a conviction that continues to guide its work today.

SUMMARY:Latino Lectures: A Church Without Borders
DESCRIPTION:Fuller Seminary’s Centro Latino is hosting the 2018 Latino Lectures “A Church Without Borders” on Fuller’s Pasadena campus October 4 & 5. The 2018 Latino Lectures will look for ways to tear down divisive walls based on enmity of race\, ethnicity\, territory\, gender\, religion\, political party\, ideology\, culture\, etc. In turn\, this conference will propose ways towards the construction of a church that transcends these walls and their corresponding policies. The Spirit of Life is a Spirit without Borders and a Church Without Borders is a church reconfigured under the logic of Pentecost (Acts 2). It is this same Spirit that will guide our conversations\, plenary sessions and spaces for mutual learning. \nFor more information\, including a full event schedule and list of guest speakers\, please visit the Latino Lectures website. \nOnline registration is required. Click below to register to attend.
