Have You Tried A “Burden Sabbath”?

We live psychologically burdened. And if we’re honest, the burden isn’t only what’s happening out there…it’s what keeps happening in here (in our thoughts and feelings): the looping headlines, the imagined worst-cases, the rehearsed conversations, the quiet dread that rides with us into the day.
Our minds are powerful: when we vividly replay or anticipate a threatening event, our bodies often respond with real stress (tight chest, shallow breath, narrowed attention). No wonder we feel worn thin! Many of us are living on autopilot, carried by worry scripts we never consciously chose.
Into that internal chaos, God gives a command that is also a mercy: Sabbath. Not only rest from work, but rest from burdens. Sabbath is a holy interrupt, a day (or moment) to step out of the fear-loop and into the presence of God. It’s a time to “renew the mind,” to remember who we are (beloved, not behind), who God is (present, not panicked), and what story is ultimately true.
Jesus modeled this kind of rest. He withdrew to quiet places to pray. He told Martha, anxious and distracted, that “one thing is necessary.” And in the storm, while others panicked, He carried a calm so deep He could sleep.
This month, try a “burden Sabbath”: when the worry story starts, pause and pray, “Not today.” Take one slow breath, and whisper, “God is here.” Then, if you can, sing. If you are driving in the car, turn up your favorite praise song and join in. Sing with all your heart… because praise doesn’t just shape theology; it can also settle the soul.
Sabbath is rest, not as escape.
