Presence in the Waiting Room

Navigating infertility can feel isolating and shameful. In the quiet ache of longing for a child, men and women carry a heavy grief, often silencing their pain out of fear that others will misunderstand, judge, or dismiss their journey. Dr. Tamla Wilson knows the hidden grief of infertility intimately, having experienced her own struggle before the birth of her two sons. She found encouragement from Hebrews 11 after a somewhat discouraging conversation with her doctor.  While pursuing her MDiv, Dr. Wilson had the opportunity to preach from Hebrews 11– the famous biblical chapter dedicated to the great heroes of faith– at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. Having recently navigated infertility and the challenge of conceiving her first son, Dr. Wilson felt a profound connection to verse 11: “And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered Him faithful who had made the promise.” Empowered by Sarah’s story, Dr. Wilson chose to share the testimony of her own son’s birth. Looking out at the congregation, she was surprised to see many women with tear-filled eyes. In that moment, she saw the invisible pain, frustration, and grief so many of her sisters-in-faith were carrying. Dr. Wilson felt a calling to create space for families struggling with infertility.

From that sermon over 12 years ago, The Waiting Room was born. The Waiting Room is a place to connect, be vulnerable, grieve, learn, and recharge. While the focus of their monthly gatherings evolves, the ministry frequently invites mental health professionals, fertility specialists, adoption agencies, and CPS caseworkers to help attendees explore their options. Beyond providing practical resources, it creates a safe environment where people can voice their experiences without fear of judgment or dismissal, inviting them to share exactly where they are on their fertility journeys.

Holding this sacred space has been a life-giving ministry. Dr. Wilson recalls a woman who attended meetings silently for months, observing the conversations and interactions. Eventually, comforted by the camaraderie and vulnerability around her, she opened up—confessing she was angry at God, an emotion she previously felt was unsafe to voice. It is in these exact moments of heartache that The Waiting Room points women toward Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” While participating in the ministry does not guarantee a specific outcome, Dr. Wilson gently reminds attendees that whatever God intends to birth within them, He will. She encourages them to pray fervently—whether that means offering a prayer of praise, or simply mustering the honesty to admit they are at their absolute limit. When you pour your heart out, He responds. The season of waiting is never easy, but The Waiting Room stands as a reminder of God’s enduring faithfulness, offering peace in the knowledge that He already holds the future.

The Waiting Room ministry at Wheeler Avenue Church is open to everyone from all walks of life and church backgrounds. Click here for more information about Waiting Room meetings or here to connect with Dr. Wilson.
