Fuller Seminary Reaffirms Statement of Faith and Articulates Theological Tenets
Fuller Seminary has long been grounded in its Statement of Faith and its calling as an evangelical, multidenominational, international, and multiethnic community dedicated to equipping men and women for the manifold ministries of Jesus Christ and his church.
At its recent meeting, the Board of Trustees reaffirmed this shared theological foundation and approved a set of articulated theological tenets intended to clarify and support the seminary’s mission.
These tenets reflect Fuller’s historical identity and ongoing commitments. They express the centrality of faithful discipleship to Christ and an affirmation of Scripture as the authority for faith and practice. They emphasize also the seminary’s embrace of rigorous scholarship and academic inquiry as expressions of Christian discipleship; its concern for justice and its affirmation of the God-given dignity of every human being; its commitment to the historical biblical understanding of marriage between one man and one woman, while rejecting discrimination based on sexual orientation and identity; its understanding of emotional and spiritual health as deeply interconnected dimensions of Christian life; its participation with the global mission of Christ; and its practice of hospitable engagement among differing perspectives.
The tenets are intended to serve the seminary’s teaching, learning, and shared life together, offering clarity about the theological commitments that shape its work in service to the church and the world.
“Our mission calls us to hold together conviction, compassion, scholarship, and hospitality,” said Board Chair Jody De Pree Vanderwel. “These commitments reflect who we have been as an institution and help guide who we are becoming as we continue to serve the church with theological depth and Christ-centered hope.”
